Burg Falkenberg
Hotel, Conference Center & Museum
From afar, you'll see the market town of Falkenberg with its majestic castle, which represents a millennium of eventful history.
Story
The origins of Falkenberg Castle probably date back to the 10th century. It was first mentioned in a document in 1154. The fortified structure changed hands several times and was threatened with decay. From 1936 to 1939, the then owner, Count Friedrich-Werner von der Schulenburg, rebuilt it and restored it in accordance with its status as a historical monument. The former German ambassador to Moscow wanted to spend his retirement there. He was implicated in the assassination attempt on Adolf Hitler on July 20, 1944, and was executed in November 1944 after only three years as lord of the castle following a verdict by the People's Court. In 2009, the town of Falkenberg purchased the castle complex and extensively renovated it for a good eight million euros. Since its opening at the end of 2015, it has been used as a conference center, hotel, museum, and event venue.
Woolsack weathering
Falkenberg Castle sits atop a hill formed by granite woolsacks that pressed up and solidified 310 to 320 million years ago, roughly in the mid-Carboniferous period. The term "woolsack weathering" was first used in a scientific description for the Falkenberg Castle Rock, on which the castle rests, seemingly fused with the rock. This rock is listed among Bavaria's 100 most beautiful geotopes.
