Naturpark Steinwald

It's one of Bavaria's smaller nature parks, yet its diversity is truly impressive. The diverse landscape is comprised of mixed forests, mystical rock formations, extinct basalt cones, and large and small bodies of water. A natural spectacle for everyone!

General

At 22,991 hectares, the Steinwald Nature Park is the second-smallest nature park in Bavaria. It was established in 1970 as one of the first nature parks in Germany. Since then, the association has been dedicated to preserving this unique natural and cultural landscape through aid and conservation projects and maintenance measures.

The highest elevation in the Steinwald is the Platte, at 946 meters. One of the highlights of the entire nature park was built on it: the 33-meter-high Oberpfalzturm (Upper Palatinate Tower). Not far from the tower is the striking Weißenstein Castle complex. The name of the Steinwald probably derives from the castle's former owners, the Weißenstein family. Over time, the "Steiner Forest" developed into the Steinwald (Stone Forest).

The over 900-meter-high granite ridge is located in the center of Europe, between the Fichtel Mountains and the Upper Palatinate Forest. The basalt hill landscape around Waldeck, which borders the nature park to the west, lies in front of the nature park in northern Upper Palatinate. These include the Armesberg, Anzenstein, and Waldeck Castle. To the northwest, the old trade route from Nuremberg via Kemnath, Neusorg, and Waldershof separates the Steinwald from the Fichtel Mountains. The nature park extends to just before Marktredwitz in the north, to Wiesau in the east, and to the northeast, it is just 20 kilometers from the Czech border. The southern border runs from the Waldnaabtal nature reserve to the town of Erbendorf and ends in the southwest at Atzmannsberg.
