The Devil's Stone near Bärnhöhe
In the middle of the ancient Stone Forest, the Devil's Stone rises from the ground like a petrified monument. The devil himself is said to have once wreaked havoc here – until humans discovered his deeds and he turned to stone in rage. Even today, a mysterious aura surrounds the rock, and anyone passing by in fog or at dusk thinks they can hear faint whispers among the granite boulders.
Der Steinwald-Phynx
A mysterious creature, the "Stone Forest Phynx," is said to have once been sighted on the striking Zipfeltannenfelsen rock. Legend tells that it took on the form of both human and animal and tested hikers who ventured too close to the rocks. Those who could solve its riddles found protection and happiness; those who failed were said to have been briefly haunted by eerie fog and rock spirits. Even today, some see the petrified contours of the Phynx in the bizarre rock formations.
The hard-drinking Pudewels
In 1613, the old Wild von Wildenreuth line died out, and the fiefdom was ready for reassignment. At a festive feast, the Margrave promised to give the estate to the person who could empty a huge bucket of wine in one go.
Only Hans von Pudewels dared to take on this challenge – and mastered it with such strength and determination that he was elevated to the new lord of Wildenreuth. Even today, folklore tells of that legendary evening when Pudewels drank the bucket and, as if carried by a mysterious wind, spat himself out the window. Thus, he became not only a feudal lord, but a legend whose spirit seems to haunt the halls and forests of Wildenreuth to this day.
Rauhnächte in the Stone Forest
Between the years, when the days are short and the nights long, the Stone Forest awakens to a time full of mystery. During the Rauhnächten (Twelve Nights), the spirits of the past are said to roam the dark forests, leaving whispers and mysterious lights between the rocks and firs. The people of the region smoked herbs and resins, set up protective symbols, and paid attention to the signs of nature to ward off misfortune and gain blessings for the coming year.
Even today, the Stone Forest captivates hikers, storytellers, and nature lovers during this special time of year. Those who walk through the misty paths sense the magic of ancient legends: the connection between nature, legend, and the mysterious powers of the Rauhnächte (Twelve Nights), which transform the forest into a world between reality and dream.
