ON THE WAY ON LONG-DISTANCE HIKING TRAILS
The two long-distance hiking trails, the Goldsteig and the Franconian Mountain Trail, cross the Steinwald at various points and intersect at the Weißenstein Castle ruins. Immerse yourself in the diverse natural landscape between the Fichtel Mountains and the Upper Palatinate Forest!
The Steinwald Nature Park is part of Germany's longest long-distance hiking trail. Starting in Marktredwitz, hikers experience the tranquil forests of the Steinwald, the Muckental Pond Pan in the Land of 1,000 Ponds, and the wildly romantic Waldnaabtal Nature Reserve on the first three stages. 660 kilometers of hiking trails lead through the entire Upper Palatinate Forest and Bavarian Forest – from Marktredwitz to Passau. It encompasses five nature parks and the Bavarian Forest and Šumava National Parks. This also allows for unlimited hiking in the Bohemian Forest from Chodová Planá in the Pilsen region to the Marchhäuser / České Žleby border crossing in South Bohemia. In addition, the Goldsteig Trail has been expanded with alternative routes and access paths. A total of 2,000 kilometers of international hiking trails are available. Despite its considerable size,The Goldsteig's length makes it interesting not only for long-distance hikers. Day hikes are equally attractive along the main route and the numerous alternative routes. The yellow S, marking the main route, and the blue S, identifying circular and feeder trails, wind their way through the region.
Stages & Routes
Since summer 2019, 100 information columns have been installed at selected natural highlights along the Goldsteig Trail in the Upper Palatinate Forest. They are intended to highlight natural treasures steeped in history, those that are easily overlooked along the trail or only become apparent upon closer inspection. At these locations, interested visitors can access background information on their smartphones using a QR code.

The Franconian Mountain Trail not only runs through Franconia, but also takes a detour through northern Upper Palatinate, more specifically through the Stiftland region and the Steinwald Nature Park. Here, the Franconian dialect also transforms into our Upper Palatinate dialect. The long-distance trail connects five popular hiking areas over 428 kilometers: the Franconian Forest, the Fichtel Mountains, the Steinwald, Franconian Switzerland, and the Nuremberg region – from Unterereichenstein to Hersbruck. The trail has been awarded the "Quality Trail for Hiking in Germany" label by the German Hiking Association.
