The Steinwald Nature Park is located in northern Upper Palatinate in the Tirschenreuth district, between the Fichtelgebirge Nature Park and the Upper Palatinate Forest. It is one of the oldest and smallest nature parks in Bavaria.

Brand in Upper PalatinateListenelement 1The municipality of Brand is the birthplace of composer and conductor Max Reger († 1916). A memorial room for the honorary citizen was set up in the town hall. Reger's birthplace is located directly across the street. You can even follow in his footsteps on the 14-kilometer Max Reger circular trail. Brand is the gateway to the Fichtel Mountains. Popular destinations such as the Kösseine and Fichtelsee are within easy reach.

Nestled in the valleys of the Fichtelnaab River, the romantic Gregnitzbach stream, and the low mountain range, the community is a paradise for nature lovers. A ride along the Fichtelnaab Cycle Path should definitely be on your vacation to-do list. On hot days, cooling off in the Selingau natural swimming pool is recommended.

ErbendorfListenelement 3The southern Steinwald town is a must for lovers of culture, history, and handicrafts. This is a great place to shop for souvenirs for your loved ones. The traditional family businesses offer a wide range of products – from fine brandies to chocolates and porcelain. Two museums (the Local History and Mining Museum and the Museum of Flight, Expulsion, and Arrival) offer insights into the town's history. The outdoor pool is especially popular with families thanks to two heated pools, a miniature golf course, a beach volleyball court, and a children's adventure area.

FuchsmühlLocated on the eastern edge of the Steinwald Forest, Fuchsmühl invites you to cycle, hike, and cross-country ski. At the stations along the Forest Adventure Trail, you can experience nature with all your senses. The wildly rugged Hackelstein massif is worth a visit – a rock often climbed by climbers. Enjoy hot days at the forest swimming pond with its spacious lawn, kiosk, playground, and campsite. Incidentally, the market town's most famous building is the "Maria Hilf" pilgrimage church. Once a year, cyclists from the surrounding area gather in various towns to set off together on the Star-Shaped Cycling Pilgrimage to Fuchsmühl.

ImmenreuthOn the outskirts of Immenreuth lies the water-rich Hirschberg- und Heidweiher nature reserve. Here, you can marvel at waterfowl and rare plant species, and park your camper next door at the Kemnather Land nature adventure pool. The Flötztal valley near Ahornberg is ideal for long hikes, for example, to Rotenfels or the Schlimbach Gorge.

Kastl near KemnathKastl lies at the foot of the Rauher Kulm, the region's landmark. In 2013, it was named "Germany's Most Beautiful Natural Wonder." Therefore, you shouldn't miss the spectacular volcanic plateau. Four themed hiking trails start in the center of Kastl and lead you to places like Kastler Berg and Wolframshof Castle.

KemnathThe town is perfect for strolling: along the historic town square, along the Fantastic Carp Trail, through Seeleiten Park, or to the Ice Pond. Kemnath is known far beyond its borders as the town of the Passion Play, which is repeated every five years. Just a few kilometers away lies Waldeck, with its beautiful castle ruins on the Schlossberg.

CrumbsYou can relax and unwind in the many recreational areas in and around Krummenaab. Therefore, make a stop at the Bürgerpark (public park) during your tour on the Fichtelnaab cycle path. NeusorgThe Franconian Mountain Trail long-distance hiking trail takes you from Neusorg train station to the highest point in the Steinwald forest, the Platte with its 33-meter-high Upper Palatinate Tower. Hidden in the woods between Neusorg and Schwarzenreuth, you'll also find the Drum Beech. This monument, made of stacked stones, commemorates a bloody battle in the War of the Bavarian Succession on August 8, 1504.

PullenreuthPullenreuth is characterized primarily by its many idyllic rural districts. Here, you can enjoy a relaxing hike or bike ride, for example, through the Fichtelnaab Valley or the Ghost Forest – a short forested area with spooky creatures. Also discover the Glass Grinder Experience. Revived by a local association, the glass grinder houses an exhibition and an information center. The Grinder's Trail also begins here – a walk through unspoiled nature with water, forest, and meadows!

Reuth bei ErbendorfThe landmark of Reuth bei Erbendorf is the castle, first mentioned in documents in 1339. It is privately owned by the Barons von Podewills. In 1742, the castle brewery was founded there, and the old home brewing rights were used commercially. The Artesia Spring rises right next door in the castle garden.

WaldershofWaldershof is nestled between the Fichtelgebirge and Steinwald nature parks. A climb up the local mountain, Kösseine, is therefore an absolute must! At an altitude of 939 meters, it offers panoramic views over the town and the Tirschenreuth district, all the way to the Czech Republic. The Kösseinebad is one of the most beautiful natural swimming pools in the region – with boat and SUP rentals, a kiosk, a sun terrace, a diving tower, and a large playground.

WiesauWiesau is famous for its many fish ponds and forest lakes. Those who want to experience this water-rich corner of the Steinwald forest can take a walk along the Wiesau Forest Lakes nature trail, swim a few laps in the "Kipp" river, or cycle across the pond basin on the Steinwald cycle path. Especially in the fall during the fishing season, the fishing villages of Kornthan and Muckenthal are a hub for fish lovers. Due to the many direct fish marketers, the two villages were jointly recognized as one of Bavaria's "100 Gourmet Places."

WindischeschenbachDue to the large number of Zoiglbier taverns, which are found in such large numbers nowhere else, Windischeschenbach and its Neuhaus district call themselves the "capital of Zoiglbier." The town lies at the foot of the Waldnaabtal nature reserve, which can be explored on foot or by bike. In the surrounding area, the GEO-Zentrum environmental education center at the Continental Deep Drilling Site invites you to visit. Here, geoscientists drilled 9,101 meters deep into the hard rock of the Upper Palatinate Earth's crust.
