He planned to spend his retirement here. It was not to be: As a co-conspirator in the July 20, 1944, he was murdered by the Nazis.

During the one-hour tour, visitors are introduced to a 15-minute film about Schulenburg's adventurous life. The separate exhibition hall offers a variety of insights into his personality and the contemporary history of the German Empire, the Weimar Republic, and the Third Reich. Six media stations present the topics in a playful way.

The journey through four floors offers insights into the castle's eventful history at selected authentic locations. This includes medieval construction techniques, the diverse defensive structures, and the very special water supply system at the old Falkenberg Castle. Finally, a historical panorama is presented, ranging from its beginnings in the mists of history to the restoration of the ruins in the 1930s and on to the now-created cultural castle.

Burggeschichte

Falkenberg Castle represents a millennium of eventful history. The castle's origins likely date back to the 10th century. It was first documented in 1154. The fortified structure changed hands several times and was threatened with decay. From 1936 to 1939, the then owner, Count Friedrich-Werner von der Schulenburg, rebuilt it and restored it in accordance with its status as a historical monument. The former German ambassador to Moscow intended to spend his retirement there, but was executed in November 1944 after only three years as lord of the castle following a ruling by the People's Court. In 2009, the town of Falkenberg purchased the castle and renovated it for a good eight million euros. Since its opening at the end of 2015, it has been used as a conference center, hotel, museum, and event venue.
