The observation tower is one of the highlights of any hike in the Steinwald forest, offering views over the largest contiguous forest area in Central Europe.

General

The Oberpfalzturm towers above the treetops and is visible even from miles away. It stands at the highest point in the Steinwald Forest, the Platte. At 946 meters, it is one of the highest mountains in the entire Fichtel Mountains. Hikers must climb 150 steps before the picturesque view into the distance is possible. From the top, you can see the largest contiguous forest area in Central Europe, all the way to the Bohemian Forest in the Czech Republic.

The 33-meter-high wooden tower is the second of its kind on the site. The first, the Upper Palatinate Tower, stood from 1972 to 1998. Its successor was officially inaugurated in September 2000.

In der Nähe: Dreifaltigkeitskapelle

Nach 10-minütigem Fußmarsch von der Burgruine Weißenstein Richtung Oberpfalzturm entdeckt man die ökumenische Dreifaltigkeitskapelle, die auch als Unterstellmöglichkeit für Wanderer und Radfahrer dient. Erbaut wurde die Andachtskapelle im Jahre 1974 aus heimischen Granit und Holz. Die architektonische Gestalt ist im wahrsten Sinne des Wortes die Dreifaltigkeit: überall sind Dreiecke verbaut - vom Grundriss bis zu den Fenstern. Und irgendwie passt auch die Wanderung auf dem Bergkamm dazu, die mit Burgruine, Waldkapelle und dem Oberpfalzturm ebenfalls der Dreiecksbeziehung beisteuert.

The Oberpfalzturm is located in the middle of the Steinwald forest, on the Franconian Mountain Trail (white-red markings) and is about a 30-minute walk from the Weißenstein castle ruins.

It's best to combine both destinations in one hike. This route will take you past the ecumenical Trinity Chapel in the Steinwald forest (pictured above).

The Oberpfalzturm is also easily accessible from the other hiking car parks in the Steinwald:Neuköslarn, Harlachberg or Pfaben.

If you are planning a hike with a stop at the Waldhaus in the Steinwald forest, the tower can be reached from there via root paths within half an hour.
