Heimat- und Handfeuerwaffenmuseum

Kemnath

The museum focuses on small arms and the history of Kemnath, including artifacts from past years. It is located in a former prison facility, with some original furniture and objects preserved. The adjacent music room also houses a collection of music automatons.

General

The Local History Working and Support Group of Kemnath and Surrounding Area (HAK) manages the Local History and Small Arms Museum, which was established in 1984 in Kemnath's "Fronveste," a historic prison building dating back to 1750. Cells with partially preserved furnishings still bear witness to the building's former use as a prison. The museum's centerpiece is the "military history collection" – a reminiscence of the first Bavarian rifle manufactory, which existed in Fortschau near Kemnath from 1689 to 1801, and at the same time an overview of the development of German small arms in the early modern period. The second focal point is the exhibition of prehistoric finds from the Kemnath area, which points to the beginnings of human settlement in what is now the Kemnath region, dating back more than 50,000 years. The museum also hosts special exhibitions on topics related to regional history and culture. A fully equipped blacksmith shop found its home in the old defensive tower.

Mechanical musical instruments are the passion of Anton Heindl from Kemnath. Over the years, he has amassed a considerable treasure trove of instruments, small mechanical marvels, many of which have now found their place in the Musikeum, a department of the Local History and Small Arms Museum. The exhibition includes metal record players, barrel organs, pianolas, and gramophones.

The Musikeum is open for group tours and events.

Special exhibition "Elvis – Welcome to my world"

until 14 January 2024

Special exhibition on Elvis at the Kemnath Museum

It's been 70 years since a then-unknown young man recorded his first record at his own expense in Memphis. He probably never dreamed he'd go down in music history and continue to impress fans all over the world. We're talking about Elvis Presley, the "King of Rock 'n' Roll," to whom the Kemnath Local History and Handgun Museum is dedicating a special exhibition in the first half of 2023. The items on loan are from Sandra Doß of Mitterteich. The foundation was actually laid by her brother, who collected various items related to his idol. When he lost interest in the collection, she took it over, even though she wasn't a big Elvis fan. It wasn't until his wife, Priscilla Presley, and her role in Dallas that Doß discovered her passion for the musician. Marion Schmid is a passionate Elvis fan and has all of his records at home. She dedicates herself to the "King" in an artistic way. Together they have put together a diverse exhibition entitled "Elvis – Welcome to my world."
