GEO Center at the Continental Deep Drilling (KTB)

Windischeschenbach

The modern environmental education center near Windischeschenbach focuses on the Earth system. Geoscientists drilled 9,101 meters deep into the hard rocks of the Upper Palatinate crust.

General

The visitor facility offers insight into the complex system of the Earth and includes, among other areas:
  • Film "Expedition Earth"
  • Permanent exhibition "System Earth"
  • Continental Deep Drilling Sample Archive
  • highest land drilling rig in the world
  • complete drilling equipment for deep drilling
  • Photovoltaic hall with 2,000 m² of solar cells
  • GEO laboratory for geoscientific experiments for school classes and groups
  • GEO Cinema
  • Specialist lectures and general lectures on geology and KTB
With these offerings, the GEO Center at the KTB aims to inspire its visitors to marvel at and reflect on our planet Earth, which gives us so much every day. However, out of greed and ignorance, we continue to misunderstand and disregard the interrelationships of the Earth's dynamic systems. A topical issue in times of climate change.

Gruppenführungen & außerschulischer Lernort für Klassen

Students can deepen their understanding of geography, natural sciences, and technology through experiments at the environmental station. Various modules on topics such as energy, volcanism, plate tectonics and earthquakes, raw materials, soil, drilling technology, and much more can be selected from the offerings. Field trips tailored to these topics, led by a specialist scientist, round out the program.
