Training to become a path warden

Theory course on Saturday, 18 March 2023 at the Gasthof Goldener Engel in Friedenfels

To maintain the hiking trails and signage in the area of the 17 member municipalities of the Steinwald Alliance, new trail sponsors are being sought to oversee sections of the trail network. A theoretical trail sponsorship course will take place at the Goldener Engel Inn in Friedenfels on Saturday, March 18, 2023, starting at 9:00 a.m. With this initiative, the Steinwald and Fichtelgebirge regions aim to increase visitor guidance in the region and bring trail markings up to the quality standards of the German Hiking Association.

Hiking trails open up our region and offer locals and tourists the opportunity to experience the Steinwald Forest. In recent years, more and more people have discovered hiking for themselves. But what hiker hasn't experienced this situation: the path forks in front of them – and there are no signs or markings to indicate the direction. You can combine your love of nature with a benefit for the public and actively participate in checking the signposts and the condition of the trails. Instruction in the marking rules will take place in a four-hour basic course on March 18th, starting at 9:00 a.m. at the Goldener Engel Inn in Friedenfels, run by the Fichtelgebirge Association (FGV) in cooperation with the Steinwald Alliance and the Upper Palatinate Forest Association (OWV). The practical part of the training takes place by appointment in the workshop and outdoors in the field. The instructor for both sessions is Werner Karl from the FGV, Marktredwitz local group.

Tasks of a path sponsor

The trail sponsor takes on the marking work on a designated section of trail, which can be up to 20 kilometers long. The responsibilities of a trail warden include marking hiking trails, clearing trees if necessary, and removing other obstacles such as stones. Major damage is reported to the department responsible for trail maintenance. Each volunteer receives a driving permit from the forestry department so that they can drive as close as possible to their trail. The trails are generally inspected two to three times a year. Athletes or dog owners who regularly hike on the trails in the municipalities of the Steinwald Alliance or in the core area of the Steinwald Nature Park are also eligible for this volunteer position.
